It is used in the oral treatment of urogenital trichomoniasis, all forms of amoebiasis except asymptomatic carrier state, Giardiasis, acute phase of Vincents disease and infections caused by anaerobic bacteria.
Metronidazole has antiprotozoal activity against Trichomonas vaginalis and other
protozoa, including Entamoeba histolytica and Giardia lamblia.It does not affect the
acidophilic flora of the vagina and it has no effect on Candida species. Metronidazole has bactericidal activity against obligate anaerobic bacteria, whether they are gram-positive or negative, bacilli or cocci.
It has no antibacterial activity against aerobic and facultative anaerobic bacteria.
Side effects may include nausea, unpleasant metallic taste, vomiting, diarrhoea or constipation. Furred tongue, glossitis and stomatitis due to overgrowth of Candida.
Rarely, antibiotic-associated colitis. Weakness, dizziness, ataxia, headache, drowsiness, insomnia, changes in mood or mental state.
Epileptiform seizures may occur due to high doses or prolonged treatment.
Transient leucopenia, thrombocytopenia. Hypersensitivity reactions. Raised liver enzyme values, cholestatic hepatitis, jaundice. Thrombophlebitis (IV).
Major and potentially fatal side effects is anaphylaxis.
If taken along with disulfiram it can cause Acute psychoses. If taken along with other antimicrobials, it can have Additive effect. The effects are reduced with phenytoin.
Check with your general physician regarding any allergies and pre existing conditions and administer Morkezel as per prescription.
